Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: N/NE Wind Stength: 10-20 knots Surf / Sea State: Flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Cloudy / sunny Max Speed: 18.3 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 19.1 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
First time on water windfoil for a little while, due to trying out the
winging malarkey via a couple of lessons. Interesting sport, but needs lots
of time to practice. The lessons had no wind, although did have a chance to
get pulled via boat on to foil. Didn't manage to stand up though. Will
continue practicing winging on Sup to get the hang of the wing.
Today was back on windfoil at Bradfield with the forecast for a light
12kts. With tide at 5 ish I was on the water at 3pm. Loads turned up, 6
wings, 4 windF, 2 fins and a variety of canoes and SUP's and DC on
raceboard 9.5. Everyone rigged for lightwinds, 8M for me, track mid, and
1300 frontwing / 500 rear. Wings were around 6M. By the time I hit the
water the wind freshened and along with everyone was flying nicely. Pretty
much perfect 12kts cleaned wind, cruising the length of the river
diagonally, and wings doing there usually sail 25 metres turn and loop the
loop. DC on raceboard took off to Wrabness. The wind dropped after 20 mins
and I thought that was that, Then bang big gusts funnelled thru the river
more NE, and I along with others was overpowered. I had to dump power flat
out downwind or close reach upwind in both straps! This was getting painful
on the front foot, pushing the nose down. I tried to move the mast foot
forward but it was too tight. The wing was too big anyway but was too lazy
to land the foil and change it. That's the real con of foiling, as its such
a faff getting in anywhere. Tide is 2 hrs be4. You cant waste too much
time. The wingers especially the lighter guys were desperately hanging on
to 6M. It was a fantastic day and unexpected! Covered around 20 miles but
they were hard miles as I breached several times in peak gusts. The 1300
wing is a little slower that the 1100 and 900, and too much of a handful
overpowered. The canoe guy who caught 3 large bass last time got zero today
claiming we scared the fish off whooshing everywhere Ffs! Some were still
out 6.00 with tide already turned. I had 2 1/2hrs of great sailing and was
very tired. Back to wing practice at Alton with lightwinds predicted next
week.
